Roger left the stage after You Better You Bet. Pete told that Roger was having breathing problems, and Pete did an bluesy version of did My Generation and Cry If You Want. The band left the stage and returned ten minutes later. They came back onstage and Roger apologized for going off the stage. He explained that he had an allergic reaction. He said that he was fine and went on. They played Won't Get Fooled Again, followed by the ususal Tommy encore without going off stage!

First thought: God it's good to see them again! All-in-all, pretty damn good for a coupla guys fast approaching retirement age! However! A daunting image that will always bruise my memory of the show: Roger's voice pushed beyond his limits... Before telling what happened, I tell you I believe they came out with the intention of rocking Chi-town with every last ounce of energy in their rock-and-roll bones. I believe Pete to be a bit partial to Chicago (he mentioned a woman friend from Chicago in the audience that was pregnant with twins) and I think his energy was shared by all on stage. The first 6-8 songs sounded fantastic and had the entire United Center on their feet for the duration. Roger sounded a bit raspy, but good. Obviously not hitting those high notes like others have reported. The set list looked to be going right on track with previous shows. But after You Better You Bet, Roger ran into a little trouble. He had some words with Pete and left the stage. (Did that happen at any othe venues?) His voice sounded hurt at that point. The stage went dark and I thought this would be the end. After about 5 minutes, all but Roger returned and Pete told the audience just to assume they went back for oxygen, transfusions, coke and brandy. Crowd loved it and they broke into f#$%$ng awesome jam on "My Generation", which Pete proudly proclaimed was his generation. That ran into "Cry If You Want" and Pete was still smokin'. Again, it looked as though the show might end, as there was no word on Roger. However, he emerged! With an explanation of "shit happens" and a huge ovation from 30,000 (my guess only) they broke out into "Won't Get Fooled Again". My first thought was "oh my god, how the hell will he be able to do the scream"? Well, he did not disappoint! Chills man - it was frickin' unbelievable to see him pull this one off. I think even Pete was surprised, as he went over and embraced him when the song was over (again, looking like an appropriate end of a show, especially with Pete introducing/crediting the other musicians). But they went on to play the last few songs in fine form (with Roger getting a little back-up). Rog' earns some points back, I must interject, for doing some fine mic twirls. I heard he cut back on this, but he obviously hasn't lost that. I give the show 7 clicks (out of eleeeven) on the old amp scale rating. Points gained for good video on the screens behind the stage. They started out showing video from the early days with the orignal 4 - I wish they would've shown more of that. Pretty cool seeing Keith pound away and Pete flyin' high. More points earned for the many windmills of Sir Pete. And yet more added for effort of 2 guys who's combined age is 123! This show was much more than I expected and I thank my son, Matt, for a most excellent Birthday Gift. (9/24) Note: 1 point deducted for some lousy lighting work that kept hitting fans in the face like one of them old-time flash bulbs - brutal! But that coulda' been the UC's fault. My best wishes to Roger - may he make it through the tour.
