The Who takes a risk or two during Houston concert

San Antonio Express, 19.11.2006

HOUSTON – The surviving Who are old. They refuse to die. But it's not for lack of trying. They nearly killed themselves during a brilliant, cathartic two-hour concert for a nearly 10...

Fanreports

Rafael Hernandez

The Who rocked down Houston's Toyota Center on saturday night. Special guests were The Pretenders, who played a great short set including some stunts from the drummer. The singer is a hot woman, who is vegetarian, and tried to turn the whole arena vegetarian (a whole bunch of Texans, come on!). A guy behind my seat kept yelling "shut up and play", jajaja. The Who set the stage on fire around 8:30. It so cool to know that every show is recorded and filmed, so you can purchase it later on the internet! First they did a set of classic songs, of which I mostly enjoyed The Seeker and Substitute. I believe this is the first tour on which they do Seeker, and they stick to the crunchy original. Then Who are you ("This is a song I wrote about who are all you fuckers!"), Behind Blue eyes and a short version (six songs) of Wire and Glass. The Wire and glass mini opera was preceded by Townshend telling how he wrote it "Its about a band of kids who look after sixties bands for inspiration... I wonder hoy the hell I came up with that idea?!". He also greeted an Astronaut he just met on the arena, and who had taken Baba O Riley into space (lucky guy!). They continued with that song, one which I had always dreamed hearing alive, then Eminence Front "A song about people who think they are greater than they are", a couple of new songs and then You Better You Bet (another of my dreamed ones). My Generation was sooo loud, so was Won't get fooled again, which included lighted drum fills as the version on The Kids are Alright film (Zak Starkey may be the best drummer alive, hey, he has it on his blood!, for moments you thought Moonie was there). Pinball Wizard was also amazing, even including some lines from Sally Simpson. Fast and with flashing lights which turned the Toyota Center into a pinball table. Amazing Journey and Sparks were played in the classic Leeds/Woodstock style (later I went to the Hard Rock Cafe where they have Townshend's Gibson smashed at Woodstock) and they finished with See Me Feel Me and the beautiful Tea and Theater (just Roger and Pete.. The "Two"). Resume, a dream come true, excellent sound, light show, perfect renditions, hundreds of windmills and jumps, all electric, no rearranged versions (they stick faithfully to the originals), great new songs, and a priceless speech from Pete "We are finishing this tour on Japan and Australia... we are trying to get killed, to die before we get old". Don't worry, you are younger than ever!
