Why Don't Y'All F-f-fade Away!

The Sun on The Who in London, Thu, 26. Oct 1989

Peter Willis

Who superstar Roger Daltrey stormed off stage after yelling: "I´ve ***ing had enough!" Daltrey stopped singing during a sell-out Wembley concert, dropped his microphone and fled. More than 10.000 fans gasped as red-faced Pete Townshend explained: "Roger´s a bit tired. If I were you I´d ask for your money back!" Then the former wildman tried to continue with four more songs - without Daltrey. And he smashed his guitar as he yelled: "I´m sorry. I´m not angry!" The astonishing scenes began when Daltrey abandoned a chorus of Behind Blue Eyes at The Who´s third British concert at London`s packed Wembley Arena.

SHOCKED

Shoked fans who had rolled up to watch The Who´s first British tour for seven years feared they were watching the death throes of the legendary group. Radio One DJ Simon Bates, who was in the audience, said: "It was incredible. I was convinced I was watching the end of The Who." But last night Roger´s spokesman said he lost his voice and only stopped because he needed urgent treatment from a top throat specialist. He said: "Roger´s very sorry if he let anyone down. We don`t know at the moment if he´ll be fit to do any more shows for a while. He may have to try and avoid using his voice so that he can appear in Tommy at the Royal Albert Hall next week."

Daltrey was back on stage last night ... just 24 hours after his amazing tantrum. His voice sounded on top form as he belted through three hours of Who classics at Wembley. His spokesman Karen Stringer said: "He was able to go ahead with the show after getting the all-clear from a throat specialist."

Obviously, he was delighted.
