Fanreports

The Who took the stage and performed the standard Quad set. It was nice to see Pete start off the show on electric. He still has the plexi-glass sound shield, but does not seem to use it. Throughout the show he was wandering from the drum kit to the far side of his end of the stage. For his electric solos and windmills (5:15, The Rock, Magic Bus, Substitute, I Can't Explain, Who Are You), Pete was center stage right in front of the drums. I have never seen Pete enjoy himself so much with The Who - he was smiling and energized the whole night. The band sounds nice and tight from playing the Quad set for about a year now. IMO, Zak Starkey is the best drummer, in terms of style and leading the band, they've had since Keith died. During the Quad numbers it soon became obvious that Daltrey's voice was not up to par. However, with the way that Quad is presented (Pete, Simon, PJ and Ben taking leads some of the time) he was able to rest his voice for when he needed it. It was really noticeable on Sea and Sand that he was hurting, but he was able to save up his voice during Drowned/Bell Boy/The Rock/Doctor Jimmy to deliver a really nice Love Reign O'er Me. The encores started out with just Pete and Roger doing Magic Bus. They then segued into Won't Get Fooled Again with Pete switching to accoustic. John thundered in halfway through on bass. Pete then gave a slight I Walk The Line tease before kicking into Behind Blue Eyes. Substitute and I Can't Explain came next. I thought they were going to go into Who Are You, but Roger strapped on his accoustic and started playing The Kids Are Alright. The rest of the band joined in about a third of the way through. Like in New Jersey, Pete added some new lines at the end, "Of course, The Kids Are Alright" "My kids are alright, your kids are alright, our kids are alright" "Irish kids are alright, English kids are alright, German kids are alright, Australian kids are alright, American kids are alright, All the kids are alright". Roger started off solo on accoustic with a bluesy Who Are You which quickly changed into a full band number. They really rocked on this tune. There was a false finish on Who Are You that flourished into a typical 90 second Who jam of noise (which was nice to see). The boys then took their "three surviving members" of, as Pete put it, "What we still call The Who", bows. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable show.
