Now that we have the date established, we can from hereon refer to it as the first big night of my life. I was 12, and no one - NO one, was a bigger Who freak than I. I studied their every second of recorded output like a graduate student. The show had been sold out since its' annoucement, and then a week before the show, a cousin turned up with 2 tickets - and, did I want them? I'm pretty sure I was speechless as my jaw had dropped wide open. Somehow, I walked away with the tickets - stunned! Fast forward to the day of the show: A band called The Rockets opened, a pretty generic sounding lot (who would also by some criminal act open for them in Birmingham Al in 1982, but whatever). It was torture - I was dying to see the Who. Then finally the lights go out, my dad grabs me, and we make a rush for the stage area. We didn't last, but saw the first 6 songs or so before returning to our seats. Just to recap: I knew the Who. I had all their domestic releases, rare imports, and many bootlegs. And, honestly, I couldn't shake the feeling, as good as they were, that something was not quite right. Daltrey must've picked up on this too. Before Baba O Riley he said "Oi - from up 'ere, it sounds like you're making more noise than we are!" So, I consoled myself that "they were just warming up". The set list was amazing, and the band was really good, but ... even to me, it was obvious that Townshend was not quite all there. His solos were hit and miss, and when addressing the crowd, he was often incoherant, and I was hanging on his every incoherant word! Someone from Dallas mentioned Pete's drug problem from this tour, and at the time, I had no knowledge of that. But we all know Pete's a boozer, and I thought he might've had a "few too many - do you think he's alright?" "DROWNED" seemed to go way past its' allotment as Townshend would talk to the crowd, play a solo, repeat. Oh, well, I have no problem if Townshend wants to party and go off live - just glad I didn't know then what I do now. As the show progressed it seemed to tighten up. My Generation, See For Miles was awesome. And the encore of Summertime Blues, Twist And Shout, and The Real Me rocked. I know my tone is somewhat critical, but it's hard to be objective about icons, so just thought I'd give it a shot.
